When we furnish a home, we usually start with the furniture, the colours and the décor. In truth, though, it is the lighting that sets the atmosphere and makes everything else feel finished.
Every surface responds to light in its own way — gloss reflects it, matte textures soften it, and natural materials come alive under the right glow. Plan the lighting first and you avoid dark corners, unwanted shadows and awkwardly placed fittings.
Light is also the simplest way to zone a space. A pendant above the table marks out a warm dining area; a floor lamp beside the sofa shapes a reading corner. Every part of the home gains a purpose, without crowding the room with fixtures.
